OTOKO is a 12-seat Japanese restaurant located at South Congress Hotel in Austin, Texas, helmed by Chef Yoshi Okai. In Japanese, omakase means, “I’ll leave it up to you.” The intimate setting lends itself to direct interaction with Head Chef Yoshi Okai for the omakase experience, featuring multiple courses selected and prepared based on ingredient availability and seasonality.
Chef Yoshi Okai was born and raised in Kyoto, Japan, where he was introduced to the culinary world at a young age through his family’s catering company. In 1998 he landed in Austin, where he went on to serve as head sushi chef of Uchi, Uchiko, East Side King and Qui. In 2015 he joined the New Waterloo team as head chef of his 12-seat omakase restaurant, Otoko. In 2017 Okai gained national recognition when he was named Best New Chef by Food and Wine Magazine. He’s made a name for himself and gained recognition for Otoko by bringing together traditional Japanese traditions along with local ingredients and cooking-styles of Central Texas.
Guests of Otoko can also experience aperitifs and after-dinner cocktails at Otoko’s private bar, Watertrade. The intimate cocktail bar includes an extensive list of Japanese whiskies, sake + craft cocktails.
